Seiko Men's SMY115 Two-Tone Stainless Steel Kinetic Black Dial Watch Review
Seiko SMY115 (5M63)Introduction:
I have always been wary of battery-powered analog watches, perhaps unfairly, so in February 2005 I bought a Seiko kinetic watch that shows the date (a 5M62). But my preference was always for a day-date.
After buying another watch in late 2011, for amusement I started scouring the enormous number of watch websites and happened to find a Seiko kinetic day-date for $135, plus postage, which I duly bought from a New York watch dealer via Amazon.
Pros:
. The watch arrived quickly as ordered. I was unhappy about the freight cost but wore it as I wanted the watch.
. The watch is pretty, handsome or elegant, depending on the term you prefer.
. It keeps near-perfect time - less than one second a week gain.
. It has a second hand and is a day-date.
. The watch and band are perfectly suited to one another. I happen to like fixed metal bands and this has two gold coloured threads between the stainless steel parts, the gold colour matching the marks and the writing on the watch face.
. After some initial glitches (see cons) the watch holds full power without much effort. I wear several watches in rotation but this watch doesn't have to be worn every day to retain full power. Of course it will still keep accurate time for six months, as I proved with its 5M62 predecessor which I left in a drawer for two months while I was overseas and which had barely moved in accuracy, say ten seconds!, in that time.
. The watch is a good weight, 108 grams (3.8oz for the antediluvian), not too heavy for a dress style watch and not too tinny or flimsy.
. For a dress watch the luminosity is very good. You can even see the second hand moving in the dark.
. At 5-bar it is adequately water protected.
Cons:
. It has no warranty outside the US. I am still p'd off that there was no warning about this despite Seiko's international warranty blurb. It seems some US sellers are not authorised to offer a warranty on watches they sell outside the US, hence the cheaper prices. This smacks of some kind of restraint of trade.
. When it arrived the watch was going but the second hand was showing a two-second bounce, indicating very low power, and the power checking mechanism showed nothing. After about a week when I wore it consistently throughout the day, including on the golf course and exercise machines, it came up to half power so I took it to my watchmaker who put it on the Seiko power up machine after which it was ok. My favourite watch blogger told me the battery, which was by then two years old from the watch's manufacture date, had been in a state of "deep discharge" which sounds and was uncomfortable.
. The Sunday on the day indicator is the traditional red, which works on most watches but is garish against the gold highlights on the black face.
. The mini half dial printed on the face to help you use the power indicator is redundant and stupid. It's not hard to work out whether the second hand is travelling the 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds for the power check without the clutter of redundant information on the watch face.
Summary:
This watch has become, and will remain, the primary standard watch I wear, out of my 15 or so active watches, for day to day purposes. It is supremely accurate, which satisfies my quasi-OCD soul. I am disappointed about the warranty but touch wood I have never had to use one for the 25 or so watches I have had over the years.
Update:
I was wrong about the warranty. The battery started to fail and had to be replaced for $100,nearly the original cost of the watch.
The watch itself now works fine and has retained its superior accuracy but I have largely moved on to Orients (see my other reviews) so I wear it only rarely.
My other review remarks are unchanged.
