Product Description

In test after test conducted around the world, no other anchor has set faster or matched the holding power of the Fortress anchor. In U.S. Navy tests, the Fortress had twice the holding power of its closest competition. Precision machined from a rust-proof, high-tensile aluminum magnesium alloy, Fortress anchors are able to penetrate deeper into most sea bottoms and outperform heavier, dull-edged steel anchors that weigh twice as much. Fortress anchors are not just stronger, but lighter. Adjustable fluke angles for superior holding power in sand and mud bottoms. Disassembles for easy storage. Lifetime Parts Replacement Warranty. Handsome yet durable anodized finish. 90 day money back guarantee.

FORTRESS ANCHOR BOATS 28-32 feet Review

I love this anchor. At 4 lbs. it is very easy to handle and stow, and with 6' to 10' of chain on the end of the rode (anchor line) to weigh down the pivoting anchor shaft, it sets very well--secure enough to hold my 20' cat ketch sailboat (an unballasted, shoal draft, sharpie weighing about 800 lbs.). This Danforth-style anchor is not great in rocks or hard clay, but it works superbly in sand, mud, muck, and other soft bottom types. I also use it as a "beach anchor" to keep my boat from floating away when we run ashore. I just shove the anchor in the sand about 10' up the beach from the waterline and tie off my boat's forward dock line to it.

Instead of heavy steel, the anodized aluminum that Fortress uses is much lighter, and the flukes are much sharper, allowing it to bite easily into soft bottoms and then to hold very well. (The holding power of the Danforth-style anchor comes from its shape, not its weight.) The anchor can also be disassembled for easier stowing, but then you'll need a screwdriver to reassemble it. I keep mine assembled, stored vertically in the front hatch. The 4 lbs. weight is so low that it doesn't adversely affect the sailing performance, even if I stow it in place on the front bow roller.

The anchor is not sufficient for heavy winds and sustained use while sleeping aboard. It is also certainly not a "storm anchor." (You would need to go a few sizes larger, into the 15 lbs. range for that--and especially if you have a larger/heavier boat than mine.) But it's the perfect daily-use "lunch hook," "beach anchor," and "swim anchor." I highly recommend this for routine/casual boating, and a much heavier second anchor for those who may stay on the water overnight, take an extended trip, or have to weather a storm. Since I use my boat almost exclusively as a day-sailor/trailer-sailor, this is the only anchor I bother to keep aboard, and it is wonderful because the low weight helps me maximize my boat's sailing performance.

If you have a place to stow this anchor while assembled, you should definitely get one. It's wonderfully made and works great.
