Pflueger Patriarch LP Baitcast Reel, 18-Pound Max Drag Review
I'm loving this reel. It replaced an Ambassadeur 5500C. The differences are pretty obvious. The Patriarch includes both a friction and magnetic breaking system. This might be a good thing if you have experience but it does take some time to get used to it. Nearest I can figure, the magnetic breaking is most effective at the beginning of the case where the speed is highest while the mechanical brake operates across the whole cast. When I change lures I usually turn up the magnetic to 8-10 and then adjust the mechanical until I clean casts. Then I back off the magnetic for the same result. The end result is nice long casts with fewer rats nests. Then - to add to the complication - you can pop off the side and adjust how many magnets are active in the magnetic breaking. I keep two on and four off (must be done in pairs). I get a few more yards (5 to 10 maybe) from the Patriarch compared with the 5500c.Reeling back in is smooth. The moving eye lays the line smoothly on the spool but I notice that during casting the eye stays in one place. I can't remember for sure but I thought the 5500c eye moved during casts. Careful when you release the spool. The tension on the line may be enough to get the spools spinning and you can end up with a rats nest without even casting.
The Patriarch fits nicely in the palm while on the rod. It allows me to keep a finger on the spool and keep in touch with the line out the front. I have it mated to a St. Croix Legend Tournament Bass Casting Rod and I think the combination is perfect though I'd like to try it out with a slightly lighter and slower action rod. I'll bet it can shoot a 1/2 ounce lure a half mile!
I didn't like my dealings with support. As I mentioned, you can engage or disengage magnets in the break system but I couldn't figure out how. The minimal instruction pamphlet didn't give any clues and neither did their support website. In fact, looking through some forums I'm guessing most people find access to the magnets obvious. But I didn't know how to do it and support responded with "Unfortunately, to experiment with the centrifugal breaks, you must take
the reel apart to access them." Wow. Helpful guys. Maybe I lost something in the translation. I don't know. Fortunately for me I feel the reel is so well built I'll never have to contact support so I'll just ignore them.
You can fish well with any nice baitcaster. This isn't going to put bigger or more fish on your hook. But you'll find each cast is a pleasure.
