Product Description
The MTI Headwater PFD was originally designed for the demands of law enforcement and EMT professionals for high-intensity water work that requires extra buoyancy and strength. Since introduction it has also quickly become a favorite of big water rafters, river guides and hard-core whitewater enthusiasts for it's abundant buoyancy and comfortable fit. This PFD has 25lbs 5oz of floatation in a slim comfortable and rugged 500D CORDURA fabric shell, with MTI's Mesh Air Flow system interior for ventilation and generous reflective panels for high visibility. Adjustable shoulders reinforced with 1.5" wide webbing that extends back to front in a single piece provide the strength agencies and whitewater boaters require for non-strong-swimmer rescue responders. A zippered front entry, waist belt, adjustable shoulder straps, mesh sides and eight points of adjustment provide a comfortable and secure fit. Four waist-mounted D-rings allow attachment of an optional crotch strap. Two generous stretch-mesh pockets, including one with an antenna slip and two chest-mounted cargo pockets offer storage for necessities and gear. Two fleece-lined hand-warmer, lash tabs front and rear, a tethered safety whistle and a helmet/hat hanger loop. (Note - This is a USGC Type III vest. It does not require swift water rescue training to wear. It DOES NOT INCLUDE a rescue belt.) SPECIFICATIONS: USCG: Type III, Buoyancy: 26 lbs. 5 oz., Sizes: XS/S (32"-36"), M/L (36"-44"), XL/XXL (44"-54").MTI Adventurewear Headwater High Buoyancy PFD Life Jacket, Cyber Yellow/Gray, X-Large/XX-Large Review
I got this because of the high buoyancy as my mouth and nose were underwater going down a level 3 rapid in a commercially supplied vest.I put a Spyderco Dragonfly2 FRN H-1 Spyder Edge Knife, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00507AJI6/ref=oh_details_o03_s01_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1, in one of the pockets with the included whistle, and tied it to a loop so I wouldn't lose it. The string is long enough to not have to untie, though I could cut or break the string if I wanted. For string I used Glide dental floss as it is pretty strong and won’t soak in water. I also attached the knife to the Chums Neo Floating Keychain, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002QFIRU2/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_img_sol_0 , so if it does get loose, I will hopefully be able to find it. I had a car key escape from my wet suit pocket and get lost in the ocean and it cost over $100 to replace, so I don't want to do something like that again. I also put a Chums Floating Marsupial Keychain/Wallet in another pocket, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PW9WT8/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_img_sol_1 .
I am 6’ 2” tall, about 200 lbs. I have a suit that fits well that is a 42” (chest) long. I was worried that the X-Large/XX-Large may be too large as it says it fits 44"-54" but it fits as snug as I want it by tightening the straps. The vest length is about as long as my rib cage (down to about a couple inches above my bellybutton.) Although there is nothing holding the vest down, and it will ride up a bit in the water, most of the float is below my chin, to keep me high enough to still breathe.
I like the openness at the shoulders and sides so the vest does not get in the way when I row on my waveski in the ocean. Also the openness allows the vest to not cause too much extra heat in hot weather. I also like the yellow, black, and reflective gray, to make it easier to spot me. I could have spent less, but a life vest did not seem like a good place to cut corners on cost.
