I purchased this helmet sight-unseen and I am quite impressed with the quality and fit-and-finish of this helmet. It is very comfortable, easy and quick to adjust for a good fit, and is light on the head and neck. It feels very substantial in the hand, but once worn, is well balanced and comfortable adding no undue stress on the head, neck, or shoulders. Being in the southwest, the sun is quite brutal, and the helmet's black color does absorb some UV and heat, but the helmet does a good job dissipating the heat and is generously vented. The leather padding that contacts the face is smooth and firm. The other padding in the helmet is synthetic and designed to wick away moisture, which it does well. One of my concerns about any helmet (instead of a traditional face mask) was if I could wear the short-billed umpire's cap with this helmet. After some practice (and that was just a few minutes), the answer is yes! Taking the helmet off quickly without taking the hat with it takes a little practice, but once you understand how the helmet operates, you can, indeed, wear the hat with the helmet without the visor getting in the way of your sight picture or the hat coming off with the helmet. Very nice. Speaking of the sight picture, the grill that protects you from the occasional errant ball is well made and the bars are smaller in diameter than a traditional mask making for a better and cleaner view from behind the mesh. The picture provided by Amazon alludes to what might be a better field-of-view from behind the cage, and the helmet lives up to what you see in the picture. My only wish is that the padding in the helmet be replaceable--currently, none of the padding is replaceable, and perhaps that is because a label in the helmet advises to replace the entire helmet every two years. Still, replacing the padding mid-season or at the end of the season might be refreshing...and pleasant when the next season rolls around! I think I'll store the helmet in the provided bag (which is nicely made, fits the helmet just right, and allows the helmet to breath) with a small cloth bag filled with baking soda to absorb moisture and odors while in hibernation. I'll see how effective that idea is after this fall ball season.
I would highly recommend this helmet to any plate umpire who is looking for a comfortable and affordable helmet that protects more of the face and head area than a traditional face mask without sacrificing comfort or utility in the field. Be well, play ball!
