First I'll start by saying I'm a pretty avid cyclist. I've done several centuries, a few Half Ironmans and regularly ride 60-90 milers. I ride on a Specialized Romin Evo Pro saddle; a lean, narrow seat with little padding, but I love it. I resisted bib shorts because of the toileting issue. Who wants to disrobe almost completely just to pee? Nonetheless, I bought some bib shorts from another company and I was a convert. And yet, when nature called, off came the layers.....until these.I wore these for the first time on a 75 mile ride with 5100+ ft of climbing, max temp 70F.
Fabric: It's pretty substantial and doesn't feel thin or cheap and at this price point it had better not. The wide bands at the legs did not make my thighs look like sausage links. I'm 5'7" @ 145lbs and bought the large; perfect!
Grippers: The silicone on the bands kept the shorts in place without being annoying. In fact, I didn't notice them at all. I also liked the length. I don't like really long or really short bike shorts. These came about mid thigh.
Shoulder straps: nice breathable mesh that hooks in front, for me, accross the breast line, I'm a 32D. I thought this would be annoying, but didn't notice it at all. In fact, at one point I forgot to rehook after a potty break, but didn't notice the difference at all and the straps stayed in place. I didn't feel too hot, but it was still a mild spring day.
Rear Exit: these are genius. There are two zippers one on either side about waist level that zip open back to front. They don't completely zip off as to separate the top from bottom, so they are still attached. You simply unhook your front, unzip the sides, pull down the rear and you are good to go...literally. When done, simply hike up your shorts, zip closed, fasten down the zippers when closed (just fold them down), hook your front (or not) and done! I did not experience any chaffing from the zippers.
Chamois: the minute my bottom hit the saddle I knew it was going to be a good ride. These are the best I've expericed so far. At 75 miles I still felt good, no soreness.
It's true you get what you pay for and these were worth every penny. I've spent longrides in uncomfortable shorts, no fun. And I'll admit, I kind of balked at the price, but I'm already thinking about a second pair as these are definitely the ones I'll be reaching for especially on long rides.
UPDATE August 2013: I've worn these now every single weekend since purchasing them in May. My rides have consistently been 60+ miles on these days. I'm still extremely happy with these bib shorts. My bum is the last thing to feel the effects of a long ride. The zippers have held up and function flawlessly and I still experience NO chafing from them AT ALL. I'm in and out of the bathroom in no time. Money well spent.
